Rate Us The Poorman’s Model Railroad has been set up to provide information about the world of model train
 layouts. Our site will supply you with a wealth of knowledge that will involve all of the major aspects of layout construction. From track planning (your ground works) to scenery details (your rewards). And along the way we’re going to give you a few money saving tips to help during construction. Model train layout construction is not as involved as it may seem and I can attest to that. I have with the help of my two children, 5 and 3, expanded our basic 4’ x 8’ layout into a modest 8’ x 16’ model train layout. I say help from the boy and girl with a heavy note of sarcasium. Although, the children have been instrumental in the development of our layout, from our basic and enjoyable 4’ x 8’ layout to the addition of a mountain with tunnels, a pond and stream, to the expansion project of 8’ x 16’ with trestle crossings and bridges, mountain passes, a small yard, a gravel pit and mine, and a terraced second level to run our model trains on.

As a hobby there is no true end to the project. You may reach your goal as far as completing a main line or a siding, or crafting a village but along the way you’re going to add on two or three items to the list before you cross off one task. In my opinion that is part of the draw to model train layouts. You are creating your own little world with your model trains and that world will not stop growing as long as your or your children’s imagination continues driving it. The size available for your model trains can limit your options but not it’s potential. With a vast number of products available in various scales (relative size of your model trains) it is possible to create anything you can think up, even with limited space.
