Model Train scenery

Materials for your model train scenery can be found anywhere. Certainly you’ll want to purchase some of the products for scenery when you get into fine detail. When you are looking for products for building infrastructure the material is easy to come by. Being in the business that I am I spend a lot of time on building sites and have acquired much of my model train scenery materials from these sites. Scrap wood, rigid foam insulation, cement board, card board and even heavy packing paper all can be used on your model train scenery. Other materials I’ve come up with from work sites include; light gauge wire (thermostat and telephone line), 2x4 stock, plywood, cable and a good number of valuable ideas for construction techniques.

The uses for these materials in your model train scenery are endless. Cement board works well inside tunnel portals when you’re looking for more texture inside. The true cement board has a course face that when painted creates an aged concrete wall look for your model train scenery. This can also be used in full view as retaining wall material. Cement board’s consistency also gives it fantastic bonding properties for adhering plaster molds and sculpture mold, two valuable products for model train scenery construction.

Scrap wood. With lumber prices what they are today any small piece you can acquire for scratch building projects is a score. The first bridge I built for the Poorman’s Model railroad was built from a couple of pieces of cherry flooring. Scratch building on your model train scenery is quiet abit more time consuming but much more rewarding. I’ve also salvaged a fair amount of mahogany decking for ties and trestle work. Drawback: preparing salvaged wood for scratch building is time consuming and can be hazardous when using the tools needed (table saw, chop saw mainly); so watch your fingers.

Card board. A staple of the industry. Card board has been used for years in model train scenery so this is no breakthrough but it is a favorite of mine. Cut into 1” wide strips and stapled together in a grid makes forming mountains, hills, valley’s, and gorges easy. Taking Mother Nature into view there are definitive flowing patterns but for the most part none of it is neat and clean. So, when working on your model train scenery don’t be concerned with it being perfect. The frame work can be cleaned up later with plaster wrap, another must when constructing model train scenery.

Rigid foam insulation. Material you can’t do without when working on model train scenery. I’ve used it everywhere. Formed hills, built tunnels, shaped walls, tunnels portals and am currently constructing a grade to the second level of the Poormans Model Railroad. The rigid foam can be easily tooled (worked with) on you model train scenery. It can be sanded, cut, melted, glued and painted with little difficulty.

These materials can be acquired easily at local building sites or purchased at hardware stores. You’ll quickly find their value when working with them on your model train scenery.
